For data volunteers

Your skills, seen doing good

Data4Good is a free data volunteering community in the UK. Work on live, supervised projects for charities, build a portfolio you can point to, and meet the people who hire.

Volunteer places full · waitlist open

Demand is high, so places are full for now. We keep teams small so every volunteer gets proper supervision. Join the waitlist and we will contact you as soon as places open.

How it works

From waitlist to showcase

  1. Join the waitlist

Tell us about your skills and interests. We will email you when places open, usually in small groups.

  2. Onboarding

Read the volunteer handbook, which covers our terms and UK data protection. Charity data is sensitive, and we take that seriously.

  3. Get matched

We place you in a small team on a supervised project that fits your skills and your availability.

  4. Deliver and showcase

Hand over your work, collect your certificate and credits, and share what you built with employers and partners.

The commitment

Flexible, but dependable

Charities rely on the work you promise, so we ask for reliability. We keep the rest as flexible as we can.

  • Most projects ask for a few hours a week over several weeks.
  • Projects run mainly online, with optional in-person events and regional meetups.
  • You will need to be 18 or over and based in the UK, or able to work UK hours.
  • You will follow the volunteer handbook and work under supervision at all times.

Volunteer places full · waitlist open

Why there is a waitlist

So many people want to volunteer that we are full for now. That is a good problem, and we are not going to solve it by letting standards slip. Every project team is small and supervised, so each volunteer gets feedback and each charity gets work it can trust. Join the waitlist and tell us a little about yourself. We will contact you when places open.

FAQs

Questions, answered

All FAQs

Can I volunteer as a data analyst for a charity in the UK?

Yes. Data4Good places data volunteers with UK charities and non-profits, working in supervised teams. We are currently at capacity, so you can join our waitlist and we will contact you when places open. Students, recent graduates, professionals and career changers are all welcome to apply.

Do I need experience to volunteer with Data4Good?

No, you do not need to be an expert. We welcome students, recent graduates, professionals and career changers, and projects are supervised so you are supported. When you join the waitlist you tell us your role and skills, which helps us match you to suitable work.

What skills do data volunteers need?

Useful skills include data analysis, spreadsheets, SQL, Python or R, data visualisation, research and clear communication. Not everyone needs all of them, because projects are done in teams. Tell us about your strengths on the waitlist form and we will look for a good fit.

How much time does volunteering take?

It depends on the project. One-off projects usually run for a set number of weeks with a few hours of volunteering each week, while hackathons take place over a short, fixed period. We will explain the expected time before you commit, so you can decide whether it fits around work or study.

Can I volunteer remotely?

Yes, most volunteering is designed to work remotely, so you can take part from anywhere in the UK. Some events, such as hackathons, may take place in person at a specific location. Details are shared on each event page.

Will volunteering help my career?

Volunteering with Data4Good gives you real project experience, teamwork and something concrete to talk about in applications and interviews. Our partners and sponsors may also be interested in meeting talented volunteers. We cannot promise a job, but the experience can be a strong step forward.
