Why we exist

Why we exist

Every charity holds data that could change what it does next. Most never get the time, the tools or the people to read it. We exist to close that gap. Skilled volunteers, careful supervision, and answers that turn into decisions.

How data becomes good

The long road from noise to signal

  1. 01 / Noise

Charities hold a lot of data

Spreadsheets, donor records, survey responses, case notes. It piles up in every corner of a charity. Useful, but scattered, and nobody has the time to make sense of it.

Fig. 01 — A scattered field of points with no pattern: raw, unexamined data.

  2. 02 / The gap

    Skills are in short supply

Most charities cannot afford a data team. Meanwhile, talented analysts and graduates are looking for real work to do. The need and the talent rarely meet.

Fig. 02 — A bar chart of six bars, one far shorter than the rest: the skills gap.

  3. 03 / The match

    We bring them together

We scope the question, match a small volunteer team and supervise every step. Patterns start to appear, and the charity sees what its own data has been saying.

Fig. 03 — A scatter plot whose points line up along a rising trend: patterns appear.

  4. 04 / Signal

Insight that people can act on

A clear dashboard. A better funding case. A smarter plan. Data that finally points somewhere, and more of the right help reaching the people who need it.

Fig. 04 — The points gather into a heart: data turned into good.

Who it is for

Built for people who want to do good with data

Data4Good works for three groups at once: the volunteers who bring the skills, the charities who bring the questions, and the partners who help make it happen.

How a project runs

From first conversation to finished work

Every project follows the same simple shape, so charities know what to expect and volunteers know where they stand.

  1. Step 1: Scope

We talk through your question, your data and what a useful answer looks like. Then we agree a clear, realistic brief.

  2. Step 2: Match

We pick a small team of volunteers whose skills fit the brief, with an experienced supervisor alongside them.

  3. Step 3: Build

The team cleans, analyses and visualises your data, checking in with you regularly. Sensitive data is handled under our data protection handbook.

  4. Step 4: Hand over

You receive the findings, the working files and a walkthrough. You own everything we produce.

  5. Step 5: Celebrate

We share what the work achieved, with your permission, and recognise the volunteers who made it happen.

Why this matters

Charities hold the data. Many lack the time and skills to use it.

Thousands of UK charities collect valuable information every day. Research from across the sector shows that turning it into insight is still a real challenge, and that is the gap our volunteers help to close.
